In December 2024, 20 years after the 2004 Sumatra earthquake and tsunami disaster, we are holding a public event in Sendai and Kyoto, to screen and talk about two films that show how the Indonesian people have dealt with the tsunami disaster. The first film to be screened is “Hafalan Shalat Delisa” by Sony Gaokasak, which features Delisa, a young girl who lost her mother, sisters, and her own leg in the tsunami, and depicts how she overcomes with her mother’s death. The other film to be screened is “Saya di Sini, Kau di Sana’ (a Tale of the Crocodile’s Twin)”, directed by Taufiqurrahman Kifu. This short documentary traces local folk tales and explores how to “live along with disaster”. Speakers include Ms. Delisa Fitri Rahmadani, the model for the film, from Indonesia, Ms. Michiko Kuribayashi (at Sendai only), who has been working with local women to cultivate communities in Minamisanriku in Miyagi prefecture, Professor Aiko Sakurai (at Kyoto only) of Kobe University, engaged in practical researches on disaster education, and the organizer Dr. Yoshimi Nishi, specialized in Indonesian Area Studies. While connecting the experiences of Indonesia and Japan, the talk will discuss the process of sharing disaster experiences among the society, the role and significance of people from outside the affected area, and how women’s support should be provided. Admission free. Films are subtitled in Japanese, and the talk will be conducted in Japanese.
