■Endnotes

At the beginning of December, I had the opportunity to join CSEAS researchers and visiting fellows to Arashiyama for the autumn leaves that had started to change their colors. Ever since I came to CSEAS last year, I have been touched by the fabulous Sakura trees in Keage or autumn leaves at Shinnyodo, and this trip was no exception. Furthermore, during this trip, I had the chance to hear from Professor Hiromu Shimizu, who initiated the event during his tenure as Director of the institute. He shared that the inspiration came from his desire to connect CSEAS, known for its diverse research, with scholars worldwide, drawing from the vibrant culture of Kyoto. After listening to his stories, the bamboo grove and a rainbow of colored leaved above the gate of Okochi Sanso seemed to nudge me to remain flexible and open to the diversity and transformation of research. As I merrily skipped back to CSEAS to tell this story to everyone, Machikita Sensei told me that his identity as scholar was also heavily influenced by Shimizu Sensei’s piece “Promoting Interdisciplinary Research and International Networking: Ten and a Half Years at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies” [in Japanese], which is reflected in his piece he wrote upon his arrival. Everyone at the CSEAS Liaison Offices told me that the flourishing greenery around the office and the potted plants in their rooms also come from Shimizu Sensei. It feels as though I have uncovered one of the many treasure boxes of the CSEAS family. (T.T.)
