War Heritage in the Chuuk Lagoon of Micronesia:
Finding Remnants of Japanese Rule on Tonoas (formerly Natsushima) Island

After World War I, Chuuk was called Truk as part of the South Seas Mandate (Nan’yō) under the Imperial Japanese administration. During World War II, it became a battlefield. An interdisciplinary research team uncovered heritage associated with and impacted by WWII. Find out about maritime archaeology initiatives that provide opportunities for us to learn about the island’s history.
