Title: The Coalitions Presidents Make: Presidential Power and its Limits in Democratic Indonesia
Speaker: Dr. Marcus Mietzner (Australian National University)
Moderator: Dr. Masaaki Okamoto (CSEAS, Kyoto University)
Abstract:
This seminar will discuss my forthcoming book (to be published by Cornell University Press in 2023) on presidential coalition-building in Indonesia. It argues that the remarkable stability of the post-2004 regime in Indonesia has been due to the effective use of coalitional presidentialism strategies towards a wide variety of actors, including non-party groups. But while this approach has secured the regime’s stability, it has also undermined democratic quality – producing a defective democracy that maintains minimalist standards of electoral functionality but is far from the kind of gradually deepening democratic polity many activists had envisaged when long-time autocrat Suharto fell in 1998.
The seminar is organized by the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A) “Political Impact of the Covid-19 Crisis” ‘.
