Contemporary Art Therapy for People with Disabilities in Myanmar
How can Art help rehabilitate those with mental disorders and disabilities? Dr. Aung Min, a medical doctor based in Yangon will share the health initiatives he has started to help those with mental disorders based on experiences over the past ten years of those suffering from the post-traumatic consequences of stress. Drawing on lessons from the use of art therapy developed at his clinic, Dr Aung Min shares his experiences on its power to help people cope with mental disabilities in Contemporary Myanmar.
Bio:
Dr. Aung Min is a graduate from the Institute of Medicine Yangon. A practicing medical doctor, he runs a clinic, together with his wife San Oo Oo, a professional psychiatrist. A writer he has published “The bad night” (1999 Burmese), “I Came into this small town for a duty” (2004 Burmese) and wrote an anthology on Contemporary Art in Burmese (2010, Eng 2018). Since 2007, as a filmmaker, he has participated in workshops organised at Yangon’s Alliance Française by teachers from Prague’s FAMU and learnt screenwriting. His first auto-biographical short documentary, “The Clinic” (2010) was selected for screening at the 2012 VDP, Kyoto, Japan. He is the script writer of “The Monk” (2014) (Dir. The Maw Naing), screened at over 50 film festivals. He shot his first full length feature debut “A Man with the Beard” (2019) and is preparing his second feature film “Yangon Midnight,” based on his own script. He also leads the introduction of Art therapy in mental health training in Yangon and other domestic areas (Karen & Kayan) in Myanmar.
The presentation will be in Burmese with interpretation to English.
