Special Seminar: Housing Governance and Housing Rights Activism in Jakarta and Beyond

Speaker: Ruriana Nafilah Anggraini (PhD Candidate, Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies, Kyoto University)
Title: The Hidden Political Economy of Apartment Governance in Jakarta
Abstract: In Jakarta’s vertical housing, apartment governance is a contested terrain between collective care and corporate extraction. It operates as both a revenue engine, turning routine maintenance into recurring income, and as a disciplinary regime that fragments and domesticates mobilisation. Here, the seemingly mundane infrastructure of everyday life is financialised and transformed into a durable apparatus for capital extraction and spatial control.

Speakers: lntan Paramaditha (Senior Lecturer, Macquarie University/Sekolah Pemikiran Perempuan), Aryo Danusiri (Assistant Professor, University of Indonesia/rimpang collective)
Title: Reimagining Resistance: Feminist and Housing Rights Activism in Contemporary Indonesia
Abstract: In this joint presentation, we examine two transformative currents in Indonesia’s activist landscape—feminist decolonial mobilization and housing justice for the urban poor—highlighting their strategic innovations, epistemic breakthroughs, and enduring societal impacts. At the core of our discussion is how activists are not only responding to crises but also innovating transformative instruments that reconfigure political imaginaries, institutions, and everyday life.
