Role of working women and men in society examined from commercials from the 80’s and 90’s

For my PhD thesis I did media research of Japanese commercials from the 80’s and 90’s in order to discover the role of working women in society. The research was done by examining video, screen captures and written material (scripts) in some cases. The goal of this research is to do it over, but instead of trying to discover trends during watching, information concerning the commercial is written down in a structured format (YAML) and stored into a database. Once all the commercials are processed this way, the information in the database is queried in order to extract statistics and discover correlations.
Afterwards, the results will be compared to see whether the old findings are found in the new research and whether new correlations were found which were not clear before.

The concepts and perception of cleanliness and beauty in Thailand

A joint project with the National Museum of Japanese History, with the cooperation of Khon Kaen University. The project focuses on the concept of cleanliness and beauty in Thailand.
For the project, a database in the format of an excel file was designed to accumulate data gathered from Thai language newspapers. The data is afterwards analyzed statistically to find correlations between the different fields, and analytically to extract information that cannot be read by automated tools. The analyzed information is used as a source that leads to further research.
