Overview
Conservation and infectious disease control
Schistosomiasis is one of the neglected tropical diseases and it is considered to have the second largest socio-economic impact following malaria among the parasitic diseases. The life cycle of the genus Schistosoma is complex and it requires a freshwater environment, freshwater snails as intermediate hosts, and mammals as definitive hosts.
The aim of this research is to contribute to both sustainable ecological conservation and public health through establihing control measures against schistosomiasis via accumulating ecological knowledge on the freshwater snails and the genus Schistosoma by revealing inhabitation and prevalence of Schistosoma in the freshwater snails.
