This research reexamines the process of nation-state formation in Myanmar/Burma from the viewpoint of "federalism." The focus is how ethnic minority Shan politicians attempted to position themselves within the nation-state from the 1930s to 1962. The primary sources are files of the Indian Office Records and memoirs written in Burmese.
