A city is populated by security instruments. I have been exploring how security instrumentation is embedded in social practices and larger urban structures. My main field is Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, and its environs. My research concerns span around analyzing socio-spatial patterns of; 1) the proliferation of gated communities; 2) security tools and practices in the setting of rental housing, and; 3) contestation between public, communal, and private authorities in urban spaces. In addition to physical security issues such as crime prevention, I am also interested in moral security matters such as the restriction of cohabitation in rental contracts.
