Overview
Analyzing the “1001 Masalah” of Qalam Magazine from an Islamic Perspective
My research at CSEAS as a Distinguished Visiting Senior Lecturer examines Qalam, a magazine that reflects the voices of Muslims in the Malay world during the 1950s and 1960s. The study focuses on the “1001 Masalah,” a set of 702 dialogues published in the magazine. As a series of questions and answers, the “1001 Masalah” serve as comprehensive record of the problems unfolding in the Muslim community during that period. Through thematic categorization, analysis, and contextualization, the study seeks to illuminate the Islamic viewpoint—particularly of the Malay world—embedded in the discussions. The research utilizes Atlas.ti software to enhance the depth of qualitative analysis, providing a robust understanding of the nuances within the data. By revealing insights into the Islamic discourse surrounding the challenges faced by Muslims in the Malay world, this study endeavors to contribute to a greater understanding of the socio-religious dynamics and the Islamic lens through which issues were discussed and navigated during a pivotal period in history.
