Overview
Cataloging Khmer-language books, manuscripts, and other publications available at CSEAS
Among the more than 100,000 items in Southeast Asian languages in the CSEAS Library, the collection’s books and manuscripts in the Khmer language have yet to be fully assessed and classified. During my 6-month fellowship at CSEAS, I will be cataloging the Khmer-language publications and compiling a master list of documents related to Angkor to be shared for suitable usage.
Since its establishment in 1995, the Authority for the Protection and Safeguarding of Angkor, or the APSARA National Authority, in Siem Reap has collected approximately 6,800 books, journals, and publications, and cataloged nearly 75 percent of them. In 2014, APSARA created the Angkor Archives, which contains approximately 4,800 documents produced by different institutions working in the Angkor Archaeological Park in the field of research, conservation, and development. While most documents gathered by APSARA date from 1993 onward, scientific documentation (excavation journals and report correspondence), graphic and photographic documentation (maps, topographic and cartographic surveys, photos, and so on from 1908 to 1975 are kept at the headquarters of the École Français d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO, the former French School of Asian Studies) in Paris, at the Angkor Conservation compound of Cambodia's Ministry of Culture, and at National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh.
The Khmer-language materials housed at the CSEAS Library are an important addition to this collective documentation of Angkor. By cataloging the materials, I aim to enhance this effort and make the materials more widely accessible. The list of documents related to Angkor available at CSEAS, in KULINE, and other libraries will serve as a reference document for future studies.
I will also investigate the daily operations and document management at the CSEAS Library and some other libraries in Japan, to compare these with the APSARA library and identify applicable solutions for improvement. I hope to improve my professional skills to further contribute to the development of APSARA.
