Overview
Achieving a Just Energy Transition (JET) in Southeast Asia with Regional-Specific Climate Governance Models
Globally, the energy sector is among the top three carbon emitters; thus, reducing emissions in this sector is integral to the energy transition needed to address climate change. The concept of a Just Energy Transition (JET) stems from the realization that climate change disproportionately affects vulnerable, small, and developing countries, which contribute minimally to global carbon emissions. JET focuses on shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources in a manner that more fairly balances the benefits and costs of energy production across all groups of people and nations. The proposed research aims to develop a climate governance model to achieve a just energy transition in selected Southeast Asian countries. This model will refine the climate governance framework formulated in a previous study conducted in the Indonesian context, which developed a climate governance model for Indonesia’s energy sector. This research will extend and apply the existing model to analyze the climate governance status of other major Southeast Asian countries, such as Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The analysis will enhance understanding of the regional context of Southeast Asia and thus contribute to identifying more durable solutions.
