Overview
The ethnic Chinese in the Republic of Vietnam seen through the Chinese newspapers published in the latter half of 1960s
This study aims to clarify the lives of the ethnic Chinese people living in the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) in 1960s. The library of Center for Southeast Asian Studies in Kyoto University has the microfilms of four Chinese newspapers published in the latter half of 1960s: from September 1966 to December 1967. At that time, in the wartime of the Vietnam War, against the Cultural Revolution promoted by the government of the People’s Republic of China helping the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), the government of the Republic of China positioned in Taipei advanced the movement of revitalization of Chinese traditional culture. Among the overseas Chinese communities supported by the Republic of China in the world, the Chinese community in Saigon, the capital city of Republic of Vietnam, was very famous for her many of Chinese voluntary associations, Chinese schools and Chinese newspapers. In the 1960s, there are many Chinese newspapers published in Saigon. And the activities of rich local Chinese merchants were reported in them. It is very useful for us to investigate the articles and advertisements of the newspapers for understanding the lives of the ethnic Chinese people in the wartime Saigon by using the materials preserved in the CSEAS library.
