The 21st century is witnessing a surge in tensions between the United States and China, where Southeast Asia holds a significant place. Southeast Asian countries may even risk becoming the venue for proxy wars between the two powers, and they also diverge with their foreign affairs in that some countries are approaching China while others do so with the United States. If the solidarity of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) wavers, their significance as a community may also weaken. In these circumstances, what path would ASEAN follow, and how should Japan interact with Southeast Asia or ASEAN? This seminar provides an opportunity to think about these issues with the Secretary General of ASEAN.
