Background:
Kyoto University has been leading regional studies in Southeast Asia for more than 60 years and has built strong academic relationships. Members from Kyoto University have been to experimental fields or to academic discussion with the partners in ASEAN. ASEAN countries have been a great partner and teacher of academics from Japan, namely for the rich natural resources and diverse cultures among others. Our collaborative projects to preserve the environment and human-activities based on local tradition and scientific technology have been unique in the world and shed light to alternative solutions to sustainable development.
To mark the anniversary year of the ASEAN chairmanship, Kyoto University Malaysia Alumni Association (MyKyoto) proposed to organise a cross-disciplinary networking event at Kyoto University. On this occasion, the organizers would like to bring together students and researchers from a wide range of fields.
This event also highlights Kyoto University’s commitment to DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging) and academic freedom. Kyoto University puts pride in its pursuit of fundamental research and ultimate scientific questions, in contrast to the short-term application research. The main theme of this event “Alternative Sustainability” represents our never-ending journey towards the academic truth along with our partners. By holding face-to-face academic meetings with current students and graduates from Southeast Asia who are at the forefront of latest research, we can expect to showcase our interdisciplinary research projects and pass over our collaborative history to the next generation.
※The 5th International Sustainable Technology, Energy and Civilization Conference 2025 (ISTECC 2025) will be held in the afternoon as a related event.
