10th Visual Documentary Project and Collaborative Exhibition with Peace Mask Project (PMP)

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) Kyoto University will hold its 10th Visual Documentary Project (VDP) screening with a collaborative exhibition on Saturday, December 18, 2021. The VDP was launched in 2012 with the aim of fostering exchanges with young filmmakers from Southeast Asia. Each year, the VDP invites those from Southeast Asia and Japan to submit short documentaries under a specific theme, with five works selected by an international committee. This year’s theme is “Death and Life.”

With this year’s project we have teamed up with the non-profit organization Peace Mask Project (PMP) to display an art installation. PMP was established to promote a shared vision of peace through workshops and exhibitions. The project aims to reaffirm cooperation with others, build trust between people and create a space for cross-cultural, cross-generational dialogue. This time, 200 masks taken over the years made from washi (Japanese paper in five layers) will be displayed in the entrance hall of the Inamori Foundation Memorial Hall. Kim Myong Hee (independent artist) and Director Kya Kim (Kyoto University of Foreign Studies) will set up and exhibit their works in line with this year’s VDP theme. As part of the collaborative project, we will hold a workshop on “Peace Mask Making” at the Research Commons, East Building CSEAS, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on December 19, 2021. We are looking for 5-6 people to participate in this workshop*. Anyone is welcome to participate.

*This will be a face-to-face event. Due to the ongoing pandemic this may be cancelled at short notice.

Peace Mask Project

PMP has carried out numerous workshops and exhibitions in South Korea, the U.S., India, Spain, Finland, and Cambodia over the past 20 years, starting with the Japan-Korea Life Mask Project (2000-2002), which produced 1580 masks. In recent years, PMP has carried out workshops for the Peace Mask East Asia Project, working with youth in Japan, China, and Korea (2014-2015), and in partnership with Women Peace Makers, an NGO in Cambodia (2018). It has also had the opportunity to create masks from 1st to 4th fourth generation hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) in Hiroshima and Nagasaki (2015-2017) and exhibit them at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand (2019).
