The Impact of Refugee Education on Career Development: A Case Study of Displaced People from Myanmar in Thailand

I am researching the impact of education on career development, focusing on displaced people from Myanmar in Thailand. Since the 2021 military coup in Myanmar, many people have fled their country, and by 2023, approximately 50,000 refugees were living in Thailand. Many of these displaced people face difficulties in continuing their education, which profoundly affects their future career paths and opportunities.

My research focuses on urban refugees, who have taken refuge in cities rather than camps. I am concentrating on students aiming for higher education, examining their career choices and the challenges they encounter. Also, I am researching educational institutions that provide education to displaced students and how they changed after the number of students increased following the coup. Many refugees do not possess passports or legal identification and lack residency status or visas in Thailand. As a result, they face significant institutional barriers to accessing higher education and employment.

Through field research, I am investigating how the educational environment has evolved as the number of displaced people has increased and how these refugees are navigating various challenges in their efforts to continue their education. Despite these difficulties, the research aims to shed light on the obstacles refugees face and how education may influence their future career opportunities.
