Reviving Al-Qalam: AI-Enhanced Exploration of Islamic Discourse and History in the Malay World
Reviving Al-Qalam represents a pioneering effort to integrate advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the study of Al-Qalam Magazine, an influential Islamic publication from the mid-20th century. This project focuses on the magazine's "1001 Masalah" section, which offers a broad spectrum of Islamic queries and discussions.
In terms of methodology, the project will employ state-of-the-art AI technologies, including Generative AI models such as Transformers, to classify thematic categories in the text. These models are exceptionally proficient at contextual language understanding, which is crucial for deciphering the intricate theological and cultural narratives in the magazine. The process involves digitizing and Romanizing the Jawi script content, followed by training the Generative AI models on this corpus to detect themes, trends, and patterns.
As for the application, this research aims to extend beyond traditional academic utilization. Firstly, it will enhance cultural preservation efforts by providing nuanced interpretations of historical Islamic discourses, aiding in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. Secondly, the findings can be integrated into educational curricula, offering students a dynamic and interactive way to explore Islamic history and thought. Thirdly, the project will inform public policy and cultural programming by providing data-driven insights into historical societal dynamics, thereby enriching contemporary understanding of cultural identity in the Malay world. Lastly, it sets a precedent for the application of AI in humanities, demonstrating the potential of technology in reviving and reinterpreting historical literature for broader societal impact.
This project, therefore, not only contributes to the academic realm, but also has far-reaching implications for cultural heritage preservation, education, public policy, and the innovative application of AI in the humanities.
