Despite oral mention by Vietnamese archaeologists of “thousands” of Han-Tang era brick tombs in northern Vietnam, there has been no catalogue made for these sites, and the archive of the Institute of Archaeology in Hanoi contains less than 50 excavation reports. Furthermore, there have been no studies published based on these reports. This project aims to analyze these reports and to determine their value for describing the economy and society of that time and place. Aside from examining the material data presented in the excavation reports, this project will consider various theories and methods, and their ideological implications, for studying them. The project also envisions the possibility of using the archaeological materials, along with textual and linguistic evidence, to obtain a greater understanding of this era when ancestors of the Vietnamese inhabited an imperial province.
