本書は総合地球環境学研究所・実践プロジェクト「熱帯泥炭地域社会再生に向けた国際的研究ハブの構築と未来可能性への地域将来像の提案」の３冊目の研究成果です。東南アジアでも最も広範に熱帯泥炭地が広がるインドネシア・リアウ州に着目し、ローカルレベルでの泥炭地をめぐるポリティクス、泥炭社会に住む人々の泥炭地への認識、彼らの生業などを学際的に分析しました。
本書では主に一つの村を分析対象として、NGO活動家による社会実装も伴いながら、複眼的な研究を行っています。そうした中から、泥炭地保全政策で忘れられがちな河川の生態系の把握の必要性と淡水漁業の活性化を通じた泥炭保全実践の可能性を指摘しました。（岡本正明）
