This international workshop addresses the reception of “science” in general and “natural sciences” in particular from the Middle East to Southeast Asia. The works of the 19th-century naturalists including Alfred Russel Wallace (d. 1913), especially his “The Malay Archipelago”, will be discussed. We will review the relevant literature through examining lesser-known aspects of natural sciences in the Muslim world. Please join us to discuss (a) the story of Wallace; (b) the European presentation of “Nature” and “Human” in the Malay-Indonesian world; and (c) their reception among other Muslim communities.
